Are healthy Halloween treats really better for you? Well, yes and no…

We all have our favourite Halloween candy…and we’re all aware of those people who decide to do the neighbourhood kids a ‘big favour’ and hand our “healthy” candy to the costumed crusaders on the 31st. But here’s the thing: Even though the person who hands out apples or other stuff that’s “good for you” on Halloween THINKS they are doing the right thing, nutritionists don’t advise doing so. Here’s why: Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, author of “Better Period Food Solution,” says: “What may be more important than the nutritional composition is the relationship to eating it. You don’t want to deprive your children of the real deal, or else they may go scrounging for it without your supervision and eat large quantities. And that can lead…to an upset stomach, or in the long term, disordered eating issues with candy or sweet treats.” The benefits of a healthy relationship with sweets may “far outweigh the nutritional components in each candy serving.” Bottom line: Since sweets should be enjoyed in moderation, most people should have the chance to enjoy the Halloween treats they like best.
