A friend one day, lover the next. Well at least that’s what the research says…

Canadian researchers say that two-thirds of romantic couples actually start out as friends. The team from the University of Victoria analyzed data from nearly 1,900 university students and adults in their project and determined that 68% of romantic relationships begin as friendships. That number is even higher among people in their 20s and in the LGBTQ+ community – at a massive 85%. They discovered little variation in the results across gender, level of education, or ethnic groups. The lead researcher says that while people are often taught that romance and friendship are totally different types of relationships, this study shows the lines between the two can be blurry.
